New News

A brand-new global news organization? I thought that the days of big news were numbered. Big newspapers like the Fish Wrapper (aka the Chicago Tribune West), the WaPo, the Miami Herald, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and even the UK's Guardian and Italy's Corriere Della Sera have all been scaling back their operations, because of high costs and decreasing revenues -- and the pressure to consolidate, as witnessed by the capture of the Wall Street Journal into the Murdoch Sky-Fox empire.

The BBC, AP, the Gray Lady, CNN, Sky-Fox News, and Le Monde were about all that was left of the international news corps, with other organizations providing more regional coverage (i.e., the AJC and Dallas Morning News covering the southern U.S., the Corriere Della Sera covering Italy, and Vishnu preserve us, Al-Jazeera covering the middle east). So it's good to see a new group getting started. Real journalists (that is, not Joe the Plumber) and a global perspective. We'll see how the coverage works out -- biased or incomplete at times, but hopefully informative. Let's all at least give GlobalPost a chance.
