Sandstorm

We're in the fourth day of sustained high winds. For the past several hours, we've have sustained winds of 20-30 miles an hour with gusts up to 60; there is an anonometer on the roof of our building to let me know for sure.

A cloud of sand a thousand feet high has been picked up by the wind, moving the west side of the Antelope Valley to the east side, bit by bit.

I drove to work this morning through swirling tornadoes of sand. Visibility is down and the winds are so high that much of the freeway has been closed. Welcome to the high desert!

Yeah, where else do you find a tumbleweed blocking your parking space, and have to roll another one aside to get in the door to work.

I generally drive right through them on the road, but I worry because I saw a "Freak Brothers" comic strip where one stuck underneath their hippie van, caught fire and blew up the van.

A serious concern indeed.
