- Russia, a international military power with nuclear weapons at its disposal, went to war with its neighbor, Georgia, a candidate for NATO membership, in a fierce border conflict fueled by ethnic tensions. Russian tanks and troops have invaded and occupied portions of Georgia and even as we speak, Russian airplanes are bombing Georgia's capital city of Tblisi and Georgia's only port on the Black Sea. So far, about a dozen Russian soliders, an unknown but greater number of Georgians, and over a thousand civilians have died in an open set-piece tank and infantry battle between the two eastern European nations, in which the Russians appear to have an overwhelming advantage in their bid to seize control of the province of South Ossetia, which if successful would nearly bisect the smaller, weaker Republic of Georgia.
