...those familiar with McCain’s thinking say he has expressed serious concern about the direction of the party and is actively seeking out and supporting candidates who can broaden the party’s reach. In McCain’s case, that means backing conservative pragmatists and moderates.This is almost certain to put him on a collision course with the future Presidential campaign of McCain's former running mate, who very clearly wants to push the party in the opposite direction. A result which I am not the only one thinks would be bad for the party in the long run.
Pragmatism inherently involves leaving ideological perfection behind and instead focusing on both what works and what is possible to accomplish with the political, fiscal, and social tools available. For that reason, of course, McCain's efforts will be seen as tantamount to treason by the social conservatives. But as far as I'm concerned, they are yesterday's news and the future lies in more or less the direction McCain is pointing to.
