A Good Question: Why Does It Matter?

Some people think that other people choose to be gay. Other people say that people are gay because of their genetics. M. LeBlanc at Bitch Ph.D. asks, why does it matter? After all, the question presupposes that if homosexuality is genetic, it’s not the homosexual’s fault. This may silence some people who want to say that they are discriminating people because of the choices that they make rather than because of something they can’t control. But it begs the question of whether homosexuality is a "fault" to be attributed to anyone or anything. It also suggests that it would be okay discriminate against gay people who lack the "gay gene." Obviously, if it's not okay to discriminate against genetically gay people, then it's not okay to discriminate against gay people at all –- so the question of why someone is gay becomes not a very interesting question.
